He is having a Lego Birthday. I looked into having the party at the Lego store (which they do) but it's very limited in what time you can have the party (only weekdays and start by 4-which would cut out any of his friends whose moms work). Then there is the whole where do you have the cake and open presents issue. So we're doing it here, at home!
You can buy a kit from the Lego store from $119.99, I still have a couple of weeks to decide if I can find something a little cheaper. The kit that is $139.99 does come with a $100 Gift Card plus packed goodie bags for 10 kids. If anyone has any links to places that sell small inexpensive Lego sets, please leave a comment.
Here are the invites...
Since my son is converting from the bigger Legos to the littler ones, I grabbed some blocks we were going to get rid of and instructed him on the size to build.
Then I applied a mailing label with all the party info...
And took the blocks apart...
I placed a tag on the bag with instructions to put the blocks together. On the back of the tag I wrote 'Should you have any problems reading the invite, feel free to call' and then my contact info.
We're going to start out the party with each kid making a little Lego guy (bought at Lego store 3 for $9.99), then we're going to have a group build to see just how high they can build a stable tower of Legos. Emphasis on stable! Legos just released their Toy Story Legos (and we have this from a previous 'Toy Story' party for our oldest) so we're doing a version of pin the tail on the donkey except they're building Mr. Potatoe Head (instructions at the very end). Then cake, presents and if we need to kill more time than we'll do simple games like duck, duck goose and musical chairs.
For the cake, I found a silicone cake mold at the Lego store of a Lego 'guy'. So, I'm making the cake! I do have skills and have done 'special' cakes before-so it's well within my skill level.
For the build a Mr. Potatoe Man...get a large poster board. Cut out a large piece of brown felt (about 3 ft by 2 ft) in the shape of a potatoe. All out of felt...cut out 2 white circles for eyes and 2 smaller black circles for the pupils, a pink round triangle for the nose, a black mustache, glasses with the same black, red lips, shoes and anything else you can think of to build your Mr. Potatoe Head. With a glue stick, glue the potatoe onto the poster board and draw arms and legs. Then play the game the traditional way but instead of it being a competition they are all building a silly Mr. Potatoe Head together (of course blind-folded).
